Having a competition and festival around the style of Plein Air is a great way to celebrate art, and it’s been done with success around the globe.  However, there are some people who still don’t understand the definition of Plein Air, or they cannot fully embrace the concept.  Plein Air is derived from the French, meaning “in the open air” and is commonly used to describe the act of painting outdoors.  Painting outdoors is nothing new, they say nothing beats natural light (just ask any photographer), and this movement became important to Impressionism, and artists such as Renoir and Monet.

Finger Lakes Plein Air Competition and Festival

Finger Lakes Plein Air Competition and Festival

The Finger Lakes Plein Air Competition & Festival is just one of the events happening this weekend in Canandaigua.  The competition part has 48 juried artists from all over the U.S. and Canada; these opting for Canandaigua instead of their studios.  So when you see artists this weekend around town, wave hello or beep your horn.  Don’t worry, they’re used to the attention, and often enjoy talking about their art.

Seeing the Nation’s Top Plein Air Painters

With artists from the US and Canada, this competition is fierce, but oh so lovely!   Famed artist Ann Larsen from the Adirondacks will be judging the competition part, which offers cash prizes.  The public will also have a chance to buy works from the participating artists during the Art Show & Sale.

Chalk It Up!

Watch downtown sidewalks turn into works of art!  It’s amazing what sidewalk chalk can do.  Chalk It Up is happening June 9th, 9 am registration – 7 pm (when awards will be presented).  Cash prizes offered in three categories, and it’s not too late to register.

Canandaigua Creates

This is the second year of Canandaigua Creates, which is Saturday, June 9, 10 am – 5pm.  Local merchants up and down Main Street (and side streets) offer demonstrations of arts and crafts, including music in the Commons on the Maxion Stage.

For more information on the cash prizes awarded, and the schedule of Canandaigua Creates visit: http://www.canandaiguaarts.com/

Local merchants are excited to join Canandaigua Foursquare Day, which is Monday, April 16th, 2012. Locals and tourists are encouraged to visit local shops, boutiques, galleries, and restaurants that day and check in with their Foursquare accounts.

“We hope to attract more savvy social media users to explore our area merchants,” Don Stevens, marketing chair for Canandaigua Downtown Merchant Association says. “Many merchants already have a huge following with Foursquare.”

During the day specials and offers come alive including demonstrations, food tastings, and more, including free soap samples at Wick-edly Sent Soap and Candle Company, drink specials at Pickering Pub, a special oil and vinegar combo at F. Olivers, and storewide chocolate specials at Sweet Expressions. Many more merchants will post their own special offers during the day on Foursquare.

A Foursquare Day party will end the day long celebration at Simply Crepes between 5-6 pm, where there will be a crepe demonstration, hors d’oeuvres, and tastings from Bellwether Hard Cider. Foursquare users can also earn a coveted Swarm Badge with a drawing for a prize during the party. Foursquare users are encouraged to unlock badges earned by checking into local businesses; badges range from Newbie, Local, Adventurer, Explorer, and more.

About Foursquare Day:
Foursquare Day is held every year on April 16th. A grass roots event started by Tampa Bay fans of foursquare in 2010, it quickly spread to communities all over the world. Foursquare Day is celebrated differently in each community.

Foursquare is a location-based social networking website for mobile devices, such as smartphones. Users “check in” at venues such as local shops, restaurants, and art galleries using a mobile website, text messaging or other devices by selecting from a list of venues the application locates nearby.
