Greetings and Happy Fall! We wish you the best and hope to see you on the street in Canandaigua. There is a lot going on this month, including a trunk show, art classes, a culinary event, plus a spa sweepstakes! Don’t forget to visit local merchants, come to their grand opening or congratulate them (more info below). For Wine Walk we have six wineries, two food tastings, plus a treat from Dolce Cupcakes. Don’t forget about Fall Into Canandaigua Festival coming up October 2nd.

Before we dive into the good event stuff, there’s something we’d like to share:

What is this 3/50 Project?

You may have seen the flyers at stores or heard someone mention this. This is an incredible concept started by Cinda Baxter, the basics being that if consumers pick three merchants, spend $50 total within the three, they’re helping their local economy tremendously. It’s such a great project, that the Canandaigua Merchant Association is a proud supporter, as well as many of the merchants themselves.

To find out more hear the MP3 Message. To view the flyer and read about it click here. Start a Trend and tell your friends!

Lake Effect is an all-male professional a cappella group made up of five guys from Western, NY who love to create music without the use of any instruments.

“We’ll mimic instruments and drums to make the song sound like what you commonly hear, but it’s all just our voices,” said Ron Veiders.

The groups’ members include Ron Veiders (baritone), Jamie Holden (tenor), Matthew Sciara (bass), Lou Shafer (tenor/vocal percussion), and Jeff Trenchard (tenor).

“Most of us have been doing music all our lives,” said Ron. “The five of us have all been singers in numerous choruses, choirs, a cappella, and solo acts. Four of us have degrees in Music, and three of us are music teachers in area schools,” he continued. “So, in essence, it’s not just about being musical artists, it’s the fact that we enjoy music so much that it’s part of our work, as well as our fun. This group is the fun side.”

The group members of Lake Effect started pursuing their passion together in 2003.

“From a group standpoint, we started as another rendition of ten men,” said Ron. “It was very difficult to find the right people, the right voices, and honestly, the same time of availability! After a couple years, we disbanded and reformed to our present size of five. It took a few goes at who was able to fill the spots, but right now we are the best we’ve ever been. We truly enjoy singing with one another. We get along great, and we just plain have fun doing what we do.”

The band, who not only performs cover tunes of popular songs and artists, also writes their own original music, as well.

“We are in the process of making a full-length debut album,” said Ron, which is expected to be released by the end of this year. When their new album is completed, they plan to have it available for download, as well as Online purchases. They also provide a five-song demo disc at all of their live performances for fans to purchase.

Also in the works, Lake Affect plans to host the 2011 ICCA (International Competition of Collegiate A Cappella) in January, re-audition for the Sing Off in the future, as well as enter themselves into the Harmony Sweepstakes Competition in April of 2011. “Other than that, we are striving to establish & make ourselves known around the WNY region as THE premiere all-male a cappella group in the area.,” said Ron.

As far as their performance at this year’s Canandaigua Art and Music Festival, they plan to deliver music that everyone has heard and loved throughout the years, but providing it in a new and unique way.

“I think our unique sound – non-instrument, no back-up recordings, and just voice – will stand out,” said Ron. “I think our fun and exuberance on stage will draw the audience in closer. Being five guys with only microphones; I think it speaks for itself.”

To hear their premier sound, you can visit their Web site, http://www.tlewny.com, or experience them live on Sunday, July 18th, 12:00 – 1 p.m., on the Commons Park Stage.

The Skiffle Minstrels, a country-western and Cajun band from Buffalo, NY, is an eccentric blend of individuals who call themselves a “dance band.”

“We play so folks can dance,” said Paul Todaro, (bass, vocals). “The show is about ‘us’ onstage and ‘us’ in the audience together.”

Alongside Paul, are band members Ron Kowalewski (accordion), Phil Knoerzer (guitar, harmonica), Maggie Zindle (fiddle), Gary Meixner (lap steel), and Gus Russo (percussion).

Their music has been performed throughout Western and Central New York, and is inspired by their dancing audience. “It’s the one reason to play music that isn’t self indulgent,” said Paul, who says many of their new fans, after seeing them perform live, share that they didn’t know they liked country music.

Paul said he remembers the exact moment on February 15th, 1975 that he realized he wanted to be an artist. And it wasn’t until February 16th, 1975 that he began pursuing his passion, for the reason of, “being bad at sports.” He describes his work as trying to find his place in the present by exploring the past.

The Skiffle Minstrels are currently playing a busy summer schedule of festivals and weddings, and will soon be recording their second album. Their first debut album, Homespun, was released in 2009, and features 12 original songs from the band. Their album is being sold on their Web site, iTunes, CDbabay, Amazon.com, as well as other festivals where they have performed. Also being sold is original merchandise of the band, including guys’ and girls’ tees.

So what should you expect from The Skiffle Minstrels? “Our usual high energy shenanigans,” joked Paul.

To the Canandaigua Art and Music Festival, they plan to bring a lot of music, and a lot of fun. “Kids love it because it’s fun; older folks love it because it ‘looks back; and in-betweens love it because it’s different and rebellious,” said Paul.

To experience the shenanigans, take a look at The Skiffle Minstrels Web site,http://www.skiffleminstrels.com, and check out her live performance at the Canandaigua Art and Music Festival, Sunday, June 18th, 12:30 p.m. – 1:30 p.m. on the Time Warner Stage.

Josie Waverly, of Hilton, has been performing since she was a young girl. “My mom had old albums of Connie Francis in a box,” said Josie. “I took them to my room and sang along. From that point on, I knew singing was for me.”

Sparked by the quality of her new inspiration, Josie sang her first solo in church at just 10 years old.

Fast forward to present day, Josie now performs for large audiences across the country with her band. Alongside Josie (lead singer, front entertainer), are band mates Tom Tramontana (lead and acoustic guitar, banjo, vocals), Gene “Sandy” Watson (lead, acoustic, and steel guitar, dobro, fiddle, vocals), Lou Alano (keyboard, vocals), Rich Farmer (bass, vocals), and Dave Forti (drums, percussion).

Josie has performed as a headliner, as well as opening act for entertainers such as Tim McGraw, Charlie Daniels, Loretta Lynn, Rascal Flatts, Keith Urban, and many more. Her work continues to be highlighted.

“I was voted NYS Queen of Country Music, as well as placed on the NYS Country Music Wall of Fame,” said Josie. “The public gives me the best feedback by the standing ovations they give at the end of my shows. They are the best meter to go by when you want to know if you make a difference.”

Along with live performances, Josie is very active in community service. She was also named Hilton’s Citizen of the Year in 1992, and has received several certificates from numerous charitable organizations, in which she helped raise thousands of dollars for their causes.

Her inspiration? “God, for trusting me with such a powerful vocal gift,” she said. “My husband for his belief in my talent and his never ending ‘can-do’ attitude, my children for dealing with having a mom that sings for others, and the public for listening!”

Although she has been recognized for her strong abilities and talents, she expresses that her goal is to make a difference in others. “Singing and entertaining for money is not number one for me,” said Josie. “Seeing everyone have fun and enjoy the music is the most important thing of all! If just one person leaves a Josie performance taking home positive energy and a glimmer of hope; that is what is important. You can’t put a price on making a difference in someone’s life!”

To experience such positive energy and great talent, please visit Josie’s Web site,http://www.josiewaverly.info, and check out her live performance at this year’s Canandaigua Art and Music Festival, Saturday, June 17th, 1:45 p.m. – 2:45 p.m. on the Time Warner Stage.

The origin of the band includes Justin Passamonte (drummer), and Mike Ortolaza (guitar), who started playing music together since 1997. With their origins in punk rock and metal, they went on to form a few different bands throughout the years before officially forming Nevergreen in 2005.

Justin and Mike decided to bring in new band members to form the evolving group, including Sara Passamonte (lead vocals), Eric Pedersen (bass), and Dylan Emerson (guitar), who played with the founders in previous years.

Their style has been labeled, “Roc City Reggae,” which infuses progressive rock and reggae, and creates a sound that has a driving groove, dynamic riffs, and catchy vocals of both male and female band members. Their unique sound combines many different, yet complimentary, types of music, just as it does its individual personalities.

“J and I are siblings, so we’ve been ‘complimenting’ each other since we were kids,” said Sara. “He is educated in music and music business, so he is usually exploring ways to enhance our talent and the band as a unit. I enjoy performing and recording most, so I benefit from being in the moment in front of our fans. Guitarist Mike is equally passionate about art and music, and he and our other guitarist Dylan are very creative.”

Sara continued, “They are responsible for writing the riffs that become the groundwork for most of our songs. Eric, our bassist and only member from outside of Rochester is extremely committed to the reggae feel, helping drive the songs along with J in the rhythm section. We all enjoy various types of music, and we all contribute to our songs.”

Nevergreen has continued to grow and recently released their first album, “The Lightshow EP,” in 2009. Recorded at Blackdog Studios in Rochester, NY, the album includes songs, “Keeps on Rockin’,” “The Synergistic Effect,” “This Town,” and “The Lightshow.”

“People tend to ask when the next one is coming out!” said Sara. And one is currently in the works. Nevergreen’s second album, “The People to Paradise EP,” is scheduled to be released soon.

As they continue to play venues around Rochester, they are also looking forward to performing around the country and beyond. “We are booking shows in nearby cities this summer, and hope to expand nationwide in the next two years,” said Sara. They plan to continue creating and releasing more music, as well as plan a tour worldwide. “In 10 years?” she added, “Maybe touring outer-space?”

Fans can listen to and purchase their album by visiting their Web site, local stores such as Record Archive, or by coming to visit them at their live performances. As they continue to grow, Nevergreen is also interested in looking for additional members to enhance their sound.

If you’re interested in hearing more of their current sound, visit their Web site, www.nevergreenband.com, or check out their live performance at this year’s Canandaigua Art and Music Festival, Friday, July 16th, 5:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. on the Time Warner Stage.

The band consists of Clint Manning (vocals/guitars), Andy Reardon (bass), and Mike Ruben (drums). Their music – smooth, alternative, and carrying a positive note – has been spreading fast throughout the region.

“Our music is diverse and upbeat,” said Clint. “We classify ourselves as an alternative band, but our music combines influence from rock, blues, jazz, and pop.”

Throughout the past year, Speak Easy Three has performed at a number of venues in their hometown, and is now planning to expand their horizons. As the trio embarks on their first full tour, they will be performing throughout the summer to a stretch of venues along the East coast, from Upstate, NY all the way down to Orlando, Florida; all of which were booked by the band members themselves.

“We are excited to get on the road and bring our music to new locations and audiences,” said Clint. “We expect to build a lot of useful contacts, have a great time, and turn some heads away from home.”

With clever lyrics, catchy melodies, and an upbeat groove, the band is quickly moving forward and making a name for themselves. With contrasting, yet fun personalities, their styles combined form a bond that helps them propel forward.

“We have a good time and a strong connection. This comes out in our musical styles as each member brings a different mood and influence to our music. Combined, we offer a one-of-a-kind blend with a positive feeling,” said Clint.

Their one-of-a-kind sound is also the product of vast musical influences, as well as the feedback they receive from fans and other musicians.

“Some specific acts that have had a big effect include Led Zeppelin, Dave Grohl, Our Lady Peace, The Beatles, Dave Matthews, and an array of 90′s music that we were exposed to growing up. Music that carries heart, soul, and energy has affected us the most,” Clint continued. “The great feedback we’ve received from individuals about our CD and live performances has really inspired us. Many times people have made it clear that they’re really into our music, passed the standard respectful compliments. The music we play feels great amongst ourselves when we practice and seeing that people can relate really takes it to the next level.”

Their debut album, which features the music they’ve been receiving praise for, is called, “Would It Matter,” and was released March 26th, 2010. “We have received a lot of positive remarks from fans, other musicians, and people in the industry alike,” said Clint.

The album can be purchased from their Web site and their live performances, as well as iTunes, Amazon, and other Online retailers.

“Music is something that we plan on being involved with indefinitely,” said Clint. “It’s not just a hobby, its part of our lives. We are committed to taking our music as far as opportunity allows.

This year’s annual Canandaigua Arts and Music Festival is almost underway, and is expected to be even bigger and better than previous years. The Festival, which will be held July 16th – July 18th, will feature not one, but two stages of musical talent performing for those who attend.

Similar to previous years, there will be a main stage where the majority of acts will be performing. Unlike previous years, there will now be a second stage, which will only be active on Saturday July 17th and Sunday July 18th. The second stage will feature a Country and Bluegrass theme, and will continue to add to the Festival’s quality and diversity of music performances.

The musical acts, booked by Rainbow Talent Agency, continue to grow each year. There are more than 20 bands performing throughout both stages this year, with incredible talent from around the Upstate NY region.

Carl Labate, Producer and Agent of Rainbow Talent Agency, is responsible for booking all of the musical acts and making sure they are a good fit for the venue.

“The bands must be a good quality act and very good at what they do,” said Labate. “This is our fourth year doing this and we now have a good waiting list of bands who want to play.”

Labate, who believes in providing opportunities for original bands who create their own material, makes sure he also provides the audience with a wide variety of music, different from year to year.

“This year is really exciting, because we’re adding a new stage,” Labate said. “This year you’ll hear some of the best bluegrass and country bands playing on that stage. And on the main stage, you’ll hear a great variety of bands, from jazz to rockabilly to Latin.”

Along with Rainbow Talent Agency, we must also thank Canandaigua’s Business Improvement District for putting this event together. This year with the expansion of musical talent and second stage for performances, people should expect to see more high-quality acts and vendors, and enjoy the family-friendly atmosphere.

“We were very impressed with the quality of artists who came in and were accepted, which benefits the community in numerous ways,” said Denise Chapel, Owner of Sweet Expression and Co-Owner of Mobile Music, with her husband Tim. “The festival helps our stores and restaurants during that particular weekend, provides great exposure for the community, and keeps people coming back,” Chapel continued. “It offers another outlet that residents can enjoy that’s free, and is always family-friendly.”

Whether you join the festivities for one day or all three, it’s guaranteed that you will enjoy the variety of music, vendors, and the friendly atmosphere.

“No matter what time of day people come, they are going to catch good, top-quality entertainment,” said Labate. “I refuse to have anything else.”

For those of you who plan on attending this year’s events and activities, festival hours are:

Friday, July 16th: 12 p.m. – 8 p.m.

Finger Lakes wines go with an abundant array of foods; meats, poultry, seafood, and yes, also some history. History is nourishing to our minds, a different kind of food that keeps us informed about where we’re from, who we are, and where we’re going.

When stepping into their historic structure, which was a house built in 1853 with original stucco, wine barrel furniture, and just a few feet away from Canandaigua Lake itself, you are taken back in time. A time to where steamboats were the only method of travel before the back roads were built, a time when the only grapes that were picked were Concord, and a time where a tradition began.

Boyd and Karen Kuenen remember picking up grapes in high school, where they first met. Boyd Kuenen had been picking up grapes at the tender age of seven; this caused him to become a serious wine maker after his retirement. Karen has a background working with Kennedy Space Center in Florida. They moved back in the Finger Lakes in 1995 and began Wilhelmus Estate Winery a few years ago.

Boyd and Karen Kuenen from Wilhelmus Estate Winery

When asked, they can take you back with a pleasant history lesson, explaining the areas where grapes grow, plus other landmarks filled with history; some with intriguing names such as Vine Valley and Whiskey Point. I asked them if they were prepared for operating a winery themselves. Karen smiles and nods.

“I really enjoy people, I never knew we would be meeting people from around the world,” Karen says.

The welcome from Boyd and Karen, along with their famous highly publicized dog, Duke, is warm and pleasant. Tourists and locals love the wine and the atmosphere.

The boutique winery is a farm winery, they pick the grapes, measure the “brix” (sugar content), and specialize in Cab Franc, Noir, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, and Riesling. Karen’s favorite white is their Cayuga, which is surprisingly dry, and her favorite red is Noiret, which goes great with steaks and lamb. This is one of my favorites too. Across the board, all Wilhelmus wines sell well.

They are especially proud of Traminette Free Run Dry, a wine that is produced by a process that Boyd learned from his father, to which the winery is named. They pick the grapes at their ripest, when they are about to burst; the juice released is natural and never been processed. This has the highest concentration of esters, very low in tannins, and some will claim the sweetest juice from the grapes. In addition to the wines they are known for their champagnes.

There is also a gift area in the tasting room where they sell rhinestone wine t-shirts, hand knitted fruit hats, photography by Karen Kuenen herself, and other Finger Lakes gifts. The winery is open Tuesday through Sunday, May through December–weekends and special occasions only in the months of January through April. Buses are welcomed, and wine packages and gift sets are also available.

If you happen to stop by Saturday or Sunday enjoy the strawberries that are dipped in Cabernet fondue with dark chocolate that goes along with tastings.
