Music is in the Air
For over 20 years, visitors have been attracted to Historic Downtown for the annual art festival that takes place on the wide sidewalks of Main Street. In 2007, the festival took it up a notch by adding outstanding musical acts that kept visitors dancing in the streets. The 2008 Canandaigua Art & Music Festival continues to offer the best musical entertainment of any other free festival in the Canandaigua area.
Friday’s sounds begin with jazz and blues and lead into an afternoon of rock finishing with the Dave Matthews Tribute Band – Big Eyed Phish. Saturday features funk, jazz and rock including the new sounds of up and coming artist Juliet Lloyd and ending the day with Hard Logic. A New Orleans Road Show experience with the Zydeco Vacation Band closes out the festival on Sunday.
All performances take place at The Commons Park stage located on the Westside of South Main Street. This great line-up is thanks to the professional staff at Rainbow Talent Agency who takes care of booking the performers and managing the stage during the 3-day festival. |

2008 Poster Features the Commons Park
The 2008 festival poster features The Commons Park, a popular Downtown gathering place that hosts many events and activities. The park originally known as the Downtown Mini Park was renamed in 2004 when the City of Canandaigua in partnership with the Canandaigua Business Improvement District began the fundraising and design phases for reconstruction. The Commons Park features a performance stage, raised floral beds, benches, a fountain and scattered tables and chairs. Beautiful hanging flower baskets enhance its appeal each summer.
The poster is original oil on canvas and was created by Downtown Canandaigua artist and gallery owner Pat Rini Rohrer. The canvas was primed and then painted a peach tone. The painting was developed in a "direct approach" that many plein air artists employ. This approach uses limited drawing preparation and is built with broad brush strokes and glazes. “This is why the painting looks like an immediate impression," Rini Rohrer states.
Pat Rini Rohrer is a long-time painter of landscapes, florals, and figures in oil on panel. Throughout the years she has experimented with oil base inks on paper, oil pastels, and various methods of printmaking. Her work is the expression of her experience of a place, a person, an event. Her brush and palette present her concepts on canvas or panel. She is in the constant morph of learning about her world, herself, and her art. Creating mood and focus, not just a realistic rendition, is what she strives for in each piece.
Pat Rini Rohrer received a Bachelor of Arts from Notre Dame College in Cleveland, Ohio and a Masters of Art Education from Nazareth College in Rochester, New York. She has been painting in studio for 40 years and has been a plein air painter for 20 years. She is a member of the Genesee Valley Plein Air Painters and Ontario County Arts Council. Pat currently organizes and teaches workshops at Studio II Workshops in the back of her gallery located at 71-73 South Main Street in Downtown Canandaigua. She can be reached at 585-394-0030 or www.prrgallery.com.
Canandaigua Farmers Market:
The 2008 Canandaigua Farmers Market season is in full swing with 32 vendors in a new downtown location under a brand new pavilion. The Mill Street Market Pavilion is located in the Mill St parking lot between Phoenix and Beeman Streets, on the east side of Main St., one block south of its former location.
The market has grown in popularity ever since its inception in 2001, with hundreds of residents and visitors attending each Saturday morning. Visitors to the market find fresh produce, flowers, honey, organic vegetables, buckwheat mulch, fruit, maple products, baked goods, onion jelly and much more.
Be sure to stop by the market during the Canandaigua Art & Music Festival on Saturday, July 19th from 8:30am-12:30pm. Canandaigua Farmers Market runs every Saturday through October 25th. Visit www.canandaigua.govoffice.com for more information.
There are several free municipal parking lots located throughout the City of Canandaigua. Areas are designated below.
